Qualifying Groups

Euro 2012 is the final tournament with 16 finalists. From 2016, the tournament will be expanded to 24 teams.

Poland and Ukraine automatically qualify for Euro 2012 as joint hosts. The 51 UEFA countries will compete in 9 qualifying groups for the remaining 14 places. These places will be taken as follows:

- 9 group winners

- 1 best group runner up. This will be decided by comparing points for each runner up in the 9 groups. Where the group consists of 6 teams, results against the bottom side will not count.

- 4 remain places will be decided by 2 leg play-offs between the remain 8 group runners up.

Qualifying matches will start in September 2010. Qualifying matches will finish in October 2011 with the play-offs in November 2011.
